CHARACTER DESIGN

Before you attempt to construct a character, we would recommend that you do some sketches of your ideas. From these initial sketches, a final idea will evolve. The sketches can also be used to establish how best to construct an armature (the character's skeleton). Left is an example of the character design sketches used for Banji, who stars in my film, Monkey Shelter.

When designing Banji, I began by producing several sketches of potential ideas. I then developed those sketches, until the character was finalized. Click here to see the final sketch that I produced for Banji.

Right is a working drawing of Hamzah's armature. When designing an armature, remember that it is the most important part of any character. In three-dimensional animation, it is the armature that is responsible for all of the character's possible movements. It must be capable of staying in the necessary positions for each frame of an action during filming.
