THREE-DIMENSIONAL ANIMATION

INTRODUCTION

The term three-dimensional animation covers everything from, clay techniques like those used to make Morph, to the latest computer generated productions. With such a wide spectrum, three-dimensional animation is an exciting medium to experiment with. It is however also a difficult one to write about and it would be unrealistic to attempt to cover all techniques on this website. With this in mind, we have decided to use the Animation Supplies site to focus on traditional three-dimensional work.

I am particularly interested in traditional three-dimensional work as it was the focus of my BA honours degree at the Surrey Institute of Art and Design. Whilst I was studying I made several short films that employed various techniques, including puppet and (to use an American term) Claymation. I enjoyed both enormously and particularly liked the aesthetic of the Claymation technique, but found the immense patience required just a little too demanding. As a result I have become increasingly interested in recreating the Claymation aesthetic in puppet animation.

The following sections highlight the key stages of a three-dimensional production.

Section 1 - Pre-production
Section 6 - Set Construction
Section 2 - Storyline/Screenplay
Section 7 - Sound Recording
Section 3 - Character Design
Section 8 - Animation
Section 4 - Storyboards
Section 9 - Equipment
Section 5 - Character Construction
Section 10 - Books
