TWO-DIMENSIONAL ANIMATION

INTRODUCTION

The term two-dimensional animation covers a wide spectrum of techniques, from basic cartoons to the latest computer aided productions. Traditionally 2D work has dominated the industry, as it is better suited to mass production than other techniques.

The first films to be produced basically consisted of an animated face drawn onto a blackboard. The animator simply rubbed out parts of his drawing and then redrew them slightly differently. When recorded onto film this gave the illusion of movement. Despite the technological advances in the technique, essentially the process remains the same to this day. It is this simplicity, which makes two-dimensional animation the ideal starting point for any budding animator.

The following sections highlight the key stages of a two-dimensional production:

Section 1 - Pre-production
Section 5 - Sound Recording
Section 2 - Storyline/Screenplay
Section 6 - Animation
Section 3 - Character Design
Section 7 - Equipment
Section 4 - Storyboards
